yes correct, the only difference is that the X was "written" and the tick was drawn. to edit the outline settings on the X all i did was right click and "convert to path" but not sure what to do on the tick as convert to path is not an option

If the tick was drawn it will be a bitmap. You will need to use Illustrator to "live trace" it to convert to vector. Or use the pen tool to draw the tick as a vector or drawn the outline on the bitmap pixel by pixel.

Some one correct me if I am barking up the wrong tree, which I probably am, lol

yes this is the conclusion that i have come to. you cannot edit a bitmap in the way that i want - however reading the adobe web-site this seems to be an option in the new fireworks !

thanks for your help

In the CS3 you can add a photoshop live effect and give it a stroke. Of course the other option is to copy it and then paste a duplicate behind it and thn give that a glow that is hardened up.

Does that make sense?

There is a trial version of Fireworks CS3 available in that link that you posted. Why not download that?
